Bridgend's 'Thank you' event celebrates commitment of volunteers
19 June 2017
The Deputy Mayor Councillor and Mayoress attended a Volunteer Thank You Event at Cats Protection’s Bridgend Adoption Centre on Saturday 10 June to recognise the commitment made by volunteers.
They were there to present STARS awards for 1 year, 5 years, 10 years, 15 years, 20 years and 25 years of volunteering service in a wide variety of roles including cat care, fostering, fundraising, reception and feral neutering work. The awards are part of a special thank you and recognition scheme run by Cats Protection.
Sue John, pictured on the right with Centre Manager Sue Dobbs, has been volunteering since 1971 in various roles including hand-rearing of orphan kittens, fundraising and trapping. Sue was awarded a special contribution award for her lifelong commitment to helping cats. Sue said: "I am delighted to have received this special award. I have always had a great passion for cats and am glad to have been able to dedicate so many years of my life to helping them."
Other awards presented included a 20 year award to Trevor and Jane Graham, and a 15 year award to their son Gareth. The family are all fundraising volunteers but are particularly well known for baking lots of delicious cakes to be sold at open days and other events.
A special ‘in memory’ statue was also presented to the family of the late Katie Button, a trap neuter and return volunteer who sadly passed away in December 2016 from meningitis.
Sue Dobbs, Centre Manager said: "Our volunteers make a huge positive difference to the lives of cats in need. They are a great inspiration to all, it was lovely to be able to reward them for their hard work and commitment and to say a heartfelt thank you to them."
